Here is a great story being passed online from friend to friend. It shows how
important your life truly is and how what may appear the smallest service to
others can make the biggest difference in someone else’s life.

The Cabbie

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. It was a cowboy's life, a life
for someone who wanted no boss. What I didn't realize was that it was also a
ministry.

Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a moving confessional.
Passengers climbed in, sat behind me in total anonymity, and told me about their
lives. I encountered people whose lives amazed me, ennobled me, made me laugh
and weep.

But none touched me more than a woman I picked up late one August night. I
was responding to a call from a small brick fourplex in a quiet part of town. I
assumed I was being sent to pick up some partiers, or someone who had just had a
fight with a lover, or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for
the industrial part of town.

When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light
in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just
honk once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away.

But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their
only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always
went to the door.

This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to
myself. So I walked to the door and knocked.

"Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something
being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small
woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox
hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had
lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no
clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner
was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said.

I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me
for my kindness. "It's nothing", I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers
the way I would want my mother treated."

"Oh, you're such a good boy", she said.

When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, "Could you drive
through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly. "Oh, I don't mind," she
said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice".

I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were glistening.

"I don't have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't have
very long."

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

"What route would you like me to take?" I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city.

She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they
were newlyweds.

She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a
ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in
front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the
darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, "I'm
tired. Let's go now."

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building,
like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were
solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting
her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was
already seated in a wheelchair.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.

"Nothing," I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered.

"There are other passengers," I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent
and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

"You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said.

"Thank you." I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light.

Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in
thought.

For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten
an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had
refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in
my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.
But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may
consider a small one.

People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will
always remember how you made them feel.

Blessings of Love and Light,

Two angels were traveling and, weary from foot travel, stopped at the home of
a family who had found good fortune. The angels clothes were worn and their
appearances were unkempt.

The family looked at the outer appearances of the angels, judged them harshly
and refused the angels a guest room. Instead, the family gave the angels access
to a cold, old basement in an abandoned building on their property.

As they prepared their beds from the garbage on the basement floor, the older
angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it.

When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t
always what they seem.”

At the end of another day’s travels, the angels came to the home of a poor
farm family. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels
sleep in their bed where the angels could have a good night’s sleep.

When the sun came up in the morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife
in tears.

Their only milking cow, which was their only livestock and their main income,
was dead in the field.

The younger angel became angry demanding of the older angel, “How could you
let this happen? The first family had everything and you fixed their wall. This
family has little, was willing to share everything and you let their cow die.”

The older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what they seem. When we stayed
in the basement, I noticed gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner
was so unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t
find it.”

The older angel continued, “Last night when we slept in the bed of the farmer
and his wife, the angel of death came for his wife. I told him to take the cow
instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Sometimes this is exactly what is going on when things don’t turn out the way
we think they should.

Just follow love and light and trust that every outcome is always to your
advantage. You might not realize it is so until much later.

When F. W. Woolworth was a young store clerk, he tried to convince his boss
to have a ten-cent sale to reduce inventory.

The boss agreed, and the idea was a resounding success. This inspired
Woolworth to open his own store and price items at a nickel and a dime. He
needed capital for such a venture, so he asked his boss to supply the capital
for part interest in the store.

His boss turned him down flat. "The idea is too risky," he told Woolworth.
"There are not enough items to sell for five and ten cents."

Woolworth went ahead without his boss's backing, and he not only was
successful in his first store, but eventually he owned a chain of F. W.
Woolworth stores across the nation.

Later, his former boss was heard to remark, "As far as I can figure out,
every word I used to turn Woolworth down cost me about a million dollars."

The beginning of a habit is like a thin thread. But every time you repeat the
habit, you strengthen it by adding another thin thread, until you have a visible
strand and then a great cable that binds you through act and thought.

You are what you repeatedly do and think. You first create your habits. Then
your habits create who you are in the world. You do not decide your future. You
decide your thoughts. Your thoughts decide your actions which become your
habits. Your habits decide your future. Achievement is not an event; it is a
habit.

The capacity for reform and change is inside each human. I’ve never met a
person in whom I couldn’t see possibilities, even those others deem failures.
Each human can change and improve his or her life anytime they choose and are
ready to commit to improvement. Whenever a human develops the desire, they can
remove what is defeating him or her, because it is always inside.

The human spirit is stronger than anything that happens to it.

Without goals and plans to reach your goals, you are like a ship sailing with
no destination.

Achieving your goals is wonderful, but make sure to have a new set of higher
standard goals before you reach the first ones.

How do you keep going? The power of your dream and desire will multiply the
energy you have to achieve your goals. When you feel desire that you want
something you do not have, rather than getting angry, feel joy. You have
identified a new goal to attain.

Remember, it is not just about attaining a goal. It is also about the quality
of life you live in the process.

And if you are feeling overwhelmed, remember, the future comes one day at a
time and each day comes hour by hour.
